Each member of the team has a specialist skill they bring, be it in training, compliance management, marketing, IT and software training, or business development. Each member also has the ability to ‘look at the bigger picture’, and the experience that allows them to fit in and act like a member of your team from the very beginning.
Our team of trainers, assessors and mentors comprises industry professionals who are exceptional in their field of expertise. All are required to have achieved the National Certificate in Adult Education and Training (Level 4) or a similar level qualification. All have been involved in the financial services industry for a number of years either as insurance or investment advisers, trainers, mentors or assessors or in the provision of support services.
David is an Authorised Financial Adviser (AFA), an Associate Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management (AFNZIM) and a member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors. He is a member of the five person expert panel Financial Dispute Resolution (FDR) which is an approved Dispute Resolution Scheme. He is also a member of the Financial Services Sector Review Group (FS-SRG) which is working to draft the new educational qualifications for financial advisers.
David is a sought after speaker on all aspects of finance and investment. David regularly speaks at various clubs, plus conducts regular public seminars from two hours to one day in duration. He has spoken at the MDRT international conference plus a number of adviser conferences and roadshows in New Zealand and overseas.
He is the author of a number of books, including ACES and Harness the Opportunity to Build Profitable Businesses. He is the publisher and editor of the Sales & Marketing Kit for financial advisers, Portfolio Construction Manual, Best Practice Manual, and the Investment KnowHow series of publications. He regularly has articles or comment published in Good Returns, National Business Review, Asset Magazine, Money Management, Journal of Financial Advice, and Leading Minds Academy. David has written much of the content for the Level 5 training courses, plus has developed and published the regulatory handbook Regulatory Guide for the Financial Services Industry: A Key Resource for Authorisation. He is also founder and promoter of the annual Finology Conference.

Tony graduated from Waikato University with a Bachelor of Management Studies and has been working in the finance industry for over 25 years, most recently in executive positions in the banking industry.
Tony has developed extensive enterprise risk management skills, transformation skills and banking knowledge as well as broad leadership experience. He enjoys being involved in the business, shaping strategy and providing solutions that ensure results are achieved. Creating robust risk management frameworks, constructive culture, effective change management, empowering competent leaders and high performing teams are his area of excellence.
Tony has worked and led transformation programmes at some of the larger banks (ASB, BNZ, and Kiwibank) in New Zealand with excellent results. He has established enterprise risk management architecture and strategy across all risk domains for boards, executive management and operational teams using best practice techniques.
Tony has a track record of leading risk teams within three start-up banks including most recently China Construction Bank where he was the Chief Risk Officer.
Tony enjoys forging strong external and internal relationships and developing as understanding of internal business issues and objectives. Tony plans and implements strategic and tactical changes for new and existing operational systems and processes so that excellent service can be delivered to clients.
Outside work, Tony is always keen for an epic mountain bike adventure and enjoys racing from time to time. There are plenty of family adventures with his wife and four children.
Nikhil brings a huge amount of practical knowledge and experience to his role as Manager - Governance, Risk, and Compliance with Strategi Limited. He is extremely well-educated and has worked at the front line of the financial services industry for a number of years.
Michaela brings a wide range of practical knowledge and experience to her role as Compliance Manager with Strategi Limited.
Prior to joining Strategi, Michaela was a risk and compliance specialist with some of New Zealand’s largest financial service providers specialising in insurances and investments. Her roles have included working closely with advisers and their businesses to provide compliance guidance and support in the run up to the introduction of the Financial Advisers Act 2008, implementation and maintenance of frameworks ensuring QFE compliance, and oversight and management of the corporate risk and compliance environment.
Michaela’s practical experience and knowledge of the day-to-day risk, compliance and governance challenges experienced at both adviser business and corporate level, makes her ideally suited to perform her role at Strategi.
Derek (Yan) Chen
Derek brings a lot of passion, and energy to his Compliance Officer role. He is well-educated and eager to learn and experience new things. He is bilingual, speaking Mandarin and English.
Prior to joining Strategi, Derek was an accountant. In this role he developed a sound understanding of entity structures and financial matters, which he applies when undertaking AML/CFT and other compliance audits.
Retha has extensive experience working with financial advisers and support staff and is widely regarded as one of the most proficient, patient and knowledgeable trainers on new platforms and technology in the New Zealand financial planning industry.
Laurie has undertaken a wide variety of roles during her career, including research with the Department of Statistics, planning for Air New Zealand, MP and constituency support for Parliamentary Services, running her own manufacturing business and, just prior to joining Strategi in 2010, acting as a licensed Immigration Adviser.
Initially Laurie joined Strategi as the Manager of Strategi Institute, maintaining and enhancing its reputation as the most respected provider of adviser training and support services. During this period, she built Strategi Institute to a level where it has consistently attained the highest qualitative rating that can be provided by NZQA, launched Radar – the industry wide online education platform, oversaw the development and continuous update of course material, developed a range of short courses, and structured the Institute to provide online, distance and classroom based learning.
Laurie is now Manager Licensing and Special Projects. This is a key role and is pivotal in assisting businesses to transition to the FMCA regime. Her attention to detail and outstanding organisational skills are ideal for managing the Strategi Group project work and optimising workflow processes so Strategi and Strategi Institute can continue to deliver exemplary service to our clients.
Nicole’s role encompasses all things related to continuing professional development training and support, and in particular Nicole is responsible for Strategi’s online learning platform ‘Radar’. Nicole also develops CPD training materials and produces and co-ordinates in-house and client newsletters.
Nicole has a background in customer service and was previously responsible for administration within the Strategi Institute team, helping students with their study requirements and managing the associated course administration.
Nicole is currently studying towards the Level 5 New Zealand Certificate in Financial Services, and is keenly interested in online learning trends, with particular emphasis on innovative ways to use technology to enhance the education experience.
Andrea joins Strategi Institute with a background in providing both exceptional customer service and high level administrative support across a number of industries.
Andrea's primary role is helping Strategi Institute’s students with their study requirements and managing the associated course administration. Andrea is the friendly voice on the phone and the first point of contact for most people contacting Strategi and Strategi Institute. Her proven communication and problem solving skills are of great benefit to Strategi’s clients and for maintaining relationships with all our stakeholders.
In her spare time, Andrea enjoys travelling, painting and running.
Sue’s background is in human resources and more recently with ACC, managing its relationship with the financial services industry. As part of this work Sue developed training seminars and workshops for advisers, accountants and insurance companies.
Sue’s academic achievements include an MBA, the Graduate Diploma in Business Studies (Personnel Management and Employment Relations) and a post-graduate Certificate in Research and Analysis. Sue is qualified in the National Standards of Adult Education and Training so that she can design and deliver training and assessment materials to the relevant standards for NZQA and Strategi Institute.
Sue has been the principal developer of the Core courses offered by Strategi Institute and is the lead trainer for those courses. Sue is also a trainer for the insurance, mortgage lending and regulatory exam courses, and is an assessor and trainer for the Financial Advice Strand: Advice process course.
Tony is a practising financial adviser with his own private planning company. In addition he works with one of New Zealand’s leading insurance brokers. Tony has been in the New Zealand financial services industry for over 20 years. He is a member of the Institute of Financial Advisers and currently is on the Auckland Branch committee. Tony has a strong belief that good financial advice should make a positive difference to peoples’ lives.
Prior to entering the financial services industry, Tony owned and managed two businesses, starting one from scratch and building it up to a multi-million dollar turnover operation. He also managed a manufacturing business in England for several years, focussing particularly on sales and marketing activities to grow the business.
Tony first trained as a teacher, teaching for many years at Auckland Grammar School. It is his love of teaching and education that has motivated him to support financial advisers through their study with Strategi Institute.
Tony is passionate about sport, in particular cricket (board member at Auckland Cornwall Cricket Club), soccer (supporting Leeds United), golf (he has a handicap of 15) and swimming.
Mat has over 15 years’ experience in sales, management, and training in the financial services industry in New Zealand and Australia. He has competed the Diploma in Financial Services (Financial Planning) in Australia, and before moving back to New Zealand in 2013, was involved with the recruitment and training of financial advisers.
Mat has his own business, employing eight staff, providing insurance, KiwiSaver and mortgage advice. Mat specialises in the mortgage adviser course training for Strategi Institute, and is also available to provide mentoring for advisers.
Mat has a passion for both training and mentoring new advisers to help them achieve their potential. His knowledge and experience, combined with his lively sense of humour, provides a training experience that ensures advisers learn the practical and theoretical skills they need and are engaged every step of the way.
Wendy has developed expertise in the financial services over the last 25 years and is well known in the New Zealand financial services industry, having worked for the likes of AMP, Sovereign, ASB, Fidelity, Tower, AIA, and ANZ. Her roles have included risk and compliance, sales and product management. She is has a deep understanding of, and is passionate about following, “client first principles” and providing good advice to clients, having provided advice as an AFA and through monitoring advisers, under the new regulatory regime.
Wendy has significant skills in the areas of business development, compliance and product management. She is motivated and results driven, and able to deal effectively with a broad range of external and internal relationships. Wendy has worked with advisers, stakeholders, strategic partners and third party distribution channels, to produce commercially astute solutions, while driving increases in new sales, cross selling and retention rates. At all times she maintains a “client first” focus despite ongoing and significant regulatory change.
Wendy brings a wealth of additional experience to the Strategi team and will be invaluable as Strategi works with QFEs, product providers and networks to transition financial advisers to the standards required to be met in the new level 5 qualification plus what is anticipated to be the most likely outcomes of the Financial Advisers Act review that is currently underway. She has a genuine interest in helping advisers met their professional requirements in the constantly changing regulatory landscape
Wendy has a Bachelor of Commerce, a Diploma in Business Studies (Personal Financial Planning), and holds the Level 5 National Certificate in Financial Services (Financial Advice).
Wendy is engaged by Strategi Institute as an assessor and student mentor. In addition she works with Strategi and advisers in the areas of compliance and best practice.
Warrick is an experienced business owner, mentor and adviser with more than 30 years’ exposure to the New Zealand financial services industry.
Warrick is an excellent role model for advisers because he has covered the whole spectrum from start-up phase to exit strategy. In 2006 he sold his own Wanganui-based financial planning practice and has since been an active trainer and mentor to other financial planners.
Warrick is valued for his lateral thinking and common sense approach to the task at hand. His dedication and passion are felt by all those who study under his mentorship.
As well as being sought after for his expertise in financial planning, Warrick is a highly regarded speaker and presenter. His compassionate nature serves him well in his role as a Celebrant, where he is called upon to counsel others during a time of difficulty.
Warrick's academic history includes his achievement of the Diploma in Personal Financial Planning from Waikato University, and the Certificate in Company Direction from the Institute of Directors. To meet the requirements for NZQA and Strategi Institute, Warrick is qualified in the National Standards of Adult Education and Training. His roles with Strategi Institute include assessing and mentoring students.
Jonothan has significant experience in lending, investment, and wealth management, having worked in New Zealand, Australia and the UK for global private banks, boutique family offices, and now his own mortgage advisory business. He also works with and mentors other start-up businesses, family offices, and post start-up businesses that require new compliant systems and processes to be implemented.
Prior to working in financial services, he attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and was commissioned into the British Army Air Corps. As a military helicopter pilot and flight commander, he flew over 400 peacekeeping, anti-terrorism and special operations, and retired at the rank of Captain.
Jonothan is an Authorised Financial Adviser, a Member of the Institute of Directors and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management.
Jonothan’s depth of experience is vital for his role as an assessor and coach for Strategi Institute. His particular focus is on the Financial Advice Strand, and through this helps advisers to ensure they are meeting best practice requirements for the provision of professional advice.
Richard is a financial adviser and mentor based in Christchurch. His career of some 30 years has spanned across both risk and investment management.
Throughout his career Richard has been committed to the training and mentoring of others in the financial services industry. He has in the past been appointed to the role of moderator with LIMRA (Agency Manager Training Course) and IIAA (Personal Risk management Course). Subsequent to these roles, he went on to assume a mentoring role with a number of the participants.
With his experience as a self-starter in the financial planning industry, Richard is well positioned to translate training theory into the practical hands-on reality that advisers need. Richard understands what it takes to be a successful people and practice manager. That is what makes him a valued member of our extended team.
Richard has achieved the Diploma in Business Studies (endorsement Personal Financial Planning) with Massey University. He is also qualified in the National Standards of Adult Education and Training to enable him to deliver training and conduct assessments to the relevant standards for NZQA and Strategi Institute.
Richard is engaged by Strategi Institute as a course presenter and student mentor. His jovial nature and pragmatic style make him a popular presenter.
